About PVOP
In the summer of 2005,
a group of people got together. Not your usual gathering. This
meeting was to create and develop a new singing experience for
the Philadelphia area, a new kind of musical experience. There
was already an all-male choir, as well as an all female choir.
But never the twain had met. Until now…
Philadelphia Voices of Pride is the region’s premiere LGBTQ
mixed voice choir. Our members come from all walks of life, and
from all vocal talent levels. From the most experienced, opera
trained Tenor to a number of novice singers making strides with
each passing season as vocalists in their own right, each
individual brings their unique perspective to the music and the
organization. From Mozart to the Mamas and the Papas, from “Candide”
to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” (what LGBTQ choir is complete
without some Judy?), our music is as diverse as the members who
sing it. Combine all that creativity, energy and hard work, and
you have an atmosphere where making a joyful noise truly is a
joy to behold.
Philadelphia Voices of Pride is more than just a chance to sing though. It is a chance to support our community. With performances at OutFest and the Barbara Gittings Memorial service, as well as organizational and personal support of MANNA, ActionAids and numerous other groups throughout the greater Philadelphia area, our members truly live up to the spirit of the mission of Philadelphia Voices of Pride; to enhance the musical, educational and cultural life in Philadelphia. Because it is all well and good to have fun singing; and believe us, we certainly enjoy what we do. But to do so, to raise your voice in song, to work towards a common goal, be it a seasonal performance or a benefit performance, raises not only the ability of our members, but the consciousness and spirits of all that hear us.
